Prince used photographs from Ratajkowski’s and others’ public Instagram posts for his 2014 “New Portraits” series, and the images were printed largely unedited — except for a statement made by Prince.
Ratajkowski attempted to purchase the piece of her naked posing from Prince’s gallery for $80,000, but it was bought by another bidder. She then purchased another Prince work featuring her picture and shared her story in a widely read article on The Cut.
Ratajkowski is now selling a non-fungible token of herself posing in front of one of Prince’s pictures of her (NFT).
She told The New York Times, “As someone who has built a career on sharing my image, I’ve had it taken from me too many times — even though it’s my livelihood.”
Ratajkowski’s NFT will be auctioned in May by Christie’s. It is titled “Buying Myself Back: A Redistribution Model.” Retribution, it seems, is a dish best eaten with cold, hard cash.
The Weeknd, Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, and Tony Hawk are all NFT players. An NFT of the late actor Chadwick Boseman was included in an Oscars swag bag, which enraged viewers following his loss to Anthony Hopkins in the Best Actor category.
