Jess Mauboy’s visceral reaction to her niece’s blind audition.
Jessica Mauboy burst into tears during one of The Voice’s most emotional moments when she learned a family member was auditioning.
Saraya Mauboy-Hudson of the Northern Territory brought Jessica Mauboy to tears on The Voice, as you might assume from her name.
As Jess’ niece, the 17-year-old was terrified to finally share her singing with her aunt.
“Watching her develop into who she is has been incredible,” Saraya told the camera. “However, as a child, she was simply known as ‘Aunty Jess’.”
“I actually don’t sing in front of her; I sing in my room. I’m not as outspoken as I’d like to be.”
“Normally, I inform my Aunty of everything, but Aunty Jess is unaware that I’m auditioning today. Saraya said, “There is a good probability she will not recognize my voice at all.”
Singing Rihanna’s Stay featuring Mikky Ekko, Saraya had Rita Ora take the stage first, with Jess and Guy Sebastian following suit not long after.
Jess recognized her niece immediately, and overtaken with emotion, she broke into tears.
“What is happening?” Rita inquired. “What is going on?”
“Hey Raya,” Jess whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“Are you two acquainted?” Rita inquired.
“She is my niece,” Jess confirmed.
“That is incredible,” Guy continued. “I believe it is unjust to have a relative on The Voice,” he joked, alluding to his brother Chris Sebastian, who won the competition last year.
After hearing the judges’ accolades, Jess delivered an absolutely beautiful speech to Saraya.
“I’m so proud of you. I’m very proud of the young person you’ve developed into. I’m aware that you’ve already encountered obstacles in your life, and I’m so proud of you for overcoming them. I want to emphasize right now that you may choose anyone… it does not have to be Aunty Jess. I’d like you to follow your heart. Right now, this is essentially your chance to go in whatever direction you feel most comfortable. No bad feelings, bub; simply do what you have to do!”
Saraya chose Rita Ora after some contemplation.
Jess hurried up to her mother, father, and sister to greet them and to offer Saraya her blessing.
“What you’re doing is an excellent choice,” Jess assured her. “You see Aunty Jess embark on this lengthy journey and adventure, and you’ve heard Aunty Jess countless times and witnessed each performance. Now you must break free from that cycle and perceive something new.”
