Gabriel Salazar, a tremendously popular social media personality with 2.2 million TikTok followers who went by the handle @gabenotbabe, died on Sunday after being involved in a high-speed automobile chase.
He was 19 years old at the time.
A deputy overheard a call from the Crystal City Police Department conducting a traffic stop with a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro early on September 26, according to the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office.
The officer then informed deputies that he was involved in a car pursuit.
According to the department’s account of events, the deputy attempted to assist with the deployment of a “tire deflation device,” but was “unsuccessful.”
According to this officer, a CCPD officer later advised that “the car had turned over and was totally engulfed in flames.”
Salazar was driving the Camaro north on Highway US 83 when he went off the road, overcorrected, and sped across the road into a ditch, according to authorities.
According to the authorities, the automobile smashed into multiple trees… flipped over, and caught fire.
Salazar and the other three passengers were all declared dead at the site.
On Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office wrote:
“We have been informed by Homeland Security Investigations that three out of the four individuals who perished as a result of the motor vehicle accident on Sunday, September 26, 2021, were identified as illegal immigrants from Mexico.”
The collision is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Salazar was known for releasing lip-syncing videos and other types of skits on the internet.
Salazar’s final Instagram image, which he published on Saturday, showed him posing beside and behind the wheel of a car.
Salazar’s family has donated more than $38,000 through a GoFundMe page set up in the days since his death.
“I’m not sure what’s real and what’s not,” the fundraiser’s organizer wrote.
“When we found out, we couldn’t believe it. I don’t want to go into too much detail because it’s difficult for us to even discuss the pain he’s been through. Never anticipated this to happen, but you’re now keeping an eye on us.”
“Gabriel adored his family and was often teasing [his] sister and younger brother.
“With a hearty hug and a smile, he was always there, and his family will never forget those sweet times.”
“He had a gentle sense of humour and sarcasm that made him so entertaining.” “It’s hard for me to believe I’m sitting here writing this.”
Many of the social media star’s loved ones and admirers, including close companion Ricky Flores, expressed their grief in response to the tragedy.
“Words cannot express how I feel right now,” Flores wrote in an Instagram story tribute.
“Man, I remember we were just talking the other day on the phone, bro.”
Dana Salazar, Salazar’s sister, also paid tribute to her brother on social media.
She posted with a collage of childhood images, “I love you very much Gabe,” and added,
“You knew I loved you with all my heart, no matter how much we fought and disagreed, and I would always tell you that.”
“I’ll always have you in my heart.”
